Diferentialul , este un mecanism , prevazut cu roti dintate , care permite rotilor motoare , ca in viraje , sa ruleze cu turatii diferite , functie de raza curbei .
In viraje , rotile din interorul curbei se invartesc cu o viteza mai mica decat cele din exterior , deoarece , in aceste conditii , se parcurg distante diferite .
La puntile nemotoare , nu exista diferential , deoarece rotile , se pot invarti liber una fata de cealalalta , nefiind interconectate .
In cazul puntii motoare , rotile primesc cuplul motor simultan de la o sursa comuna , iar in viraje , trebuie sa se roteasca , cu viteze diferite .
Automobilele cu tractiune integrala , au in compunere trei diferentiale , fata , spate si central , acesta din urma fiind necesar , deoarece rotile din fata nu se rotesc cu aceeasi viteza , ca cele din spate .
Constructiv , exista mai multe tipuri de diferentiale , cel mai raspandit , in cazul automobilelor de serie , fiind , diferentialul deschis , care este si cel mai simplu din punct de vedere constructiv .
Acest tip de diferential , are in componenta niste roti dintate ,dupa cum s-a mai precizat si un pinion principal , care primeste cuplul de la motor , transmitandu-l mai departe , planetarelor , prin intermediul unor pinioane mai mici .
Rotile dintate din componenta diferentialului , se cupleaza in viraje , determinand o scadere a vitezei rotilor din interiorul curbei si o crestere proportionala a vitezei rotilor din exterior .
Acest tip de diferential , prezina niste limite in cazul unor portiuni de drum alunecos , deoarece aplicand acelasi cuplu motor ambelor roti , in mod egal , in cazul in care una dintre roti , patineaza , maximul de cuplu pe care cealalta roata il poate primi este acelasi pe care roata care patineaza , il transmite portiunii de drum . Altfel spus , acest diferential nu va putea transmite mai mult cuplu de rotatie , rotii cu aderenta buna , decat maximul de cuplu , pe care roata cu mai putina aderenta il poate transfera suprafetei de drum , aceasta insemnand ca roata fara aderenta se va roti in gol , iar cealalalta va sta pe loc .
Eliminarea acestor inconveniente , poate fi depasit de diferentialul autoblocant .
Diferentialul autoblocant determina ambele roti , sa se rotesca cu aceeasi viteza , prin blocarea pinioanelor interne , astfel ca intreg cuplul motor , va fi transferat rotii cu aderenta mai buna , chiar daca cealalalta roata este suspendata .
Si la acest tip de diferential autoblocant , ne intilnim cu probleme , deoarece , datorita faptului ca toate rotile au aceeasi viteza chiar si in viraje , iar rotile din interiorul virajelor , se vor invarti , dupa cum s-a aratat , cu acceasi viteza ca cele din exterior , vor derapa , acest fapt contrbuind la uzura lor .
Astfel s-a creat diferentialul cu alunecare limitata LSD (Limited Slip Differential) , care este o combinatie intre cele doua tipuri descrise mai sus , diferentialul simplu si diferentialul autoblocant , la care transmiterea cuplului motor , se face la roata cu aderenta mai buna , intr-un raport de regula , de 1:5 , cat si prin rotirea in viraje , a rotilor din exterior cu viteze mai mari fata de rotile din interiorul curbei . Exista si la acest tip de diferential limite , care se refera la situatia in care putem ajunge , cand avem o roata care patineaza intens , aceasta , aflandu-se practic in stare suspendata , cu aderenta 0, la sol. In acest caz chiar daca roata cu aderenta mai buna primeste de cinci ori mai mult cuplu , conform raportului de 1:5 , in cazul particular expus , mai sus , in care cuplul la roata suspendata este 0 , atunci si cuplul la roata cu aderenta mai buna , va fi tot 0 , deoarece 0x5=0.
Astfel s-a ajuns la diferentialele de tip Torsen (torque sensitive-sensibil la cuplu) , acesta , reactionand instantaneu la fiecare dezechilibru de cuplu , care intervine intre cele doua roti motoare , canalizand cuplul , inspre roata cu cea mai buna aderenta la sol .
